Preliminary Task

This is the short film that we have made for our Preliminary Task. We decided to make a horror film, after debating whether to try and do horror, comedy or action. We chose to make a horror film because we all felt that horror films are a lot more intense and they grip the audience a lot more than a comedy or an action film would. The main reason we chose to do a horror over a comedy or an action film is because the majority of use feel that our favourite film genre is horror, so we decided to combine all of our imaginations and what we like about horror films into one, to create our own version of a horror film.

We decided to use the storyline that we did because we felt that if our film was to be made by a major film company like Universal, with a high budget, world famous actors and the ability to have good special effects, it would be a major success, so we wanted to try and make a smaller version to see what it would be like. We chose to have a man with a mask as the killer because by seeing previous horror films that have killers with masks on, we think that most of them have been big hits worldwide, such as 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Strangers' and 'Scream', and that killers in masks are the scariest type of villain. We tried to recreate this by using a mask that was in the store room in the schools Drama department.

We wanted to have a scene with a hanging doll in it because dolls are now a thing that people find quite scary, due to them being in older horror films such as 'Chucky' and 'Dead Silence'. We wanted to create a haunting affect by having it hanging by the neck. We believe that with the non-diegetic music in the background of the scene, it turned out quite haunting.
